Semi Overweight

When we were in high school, my best friend Martin and I were ASB officers each of our four years, and throughout that time were required to produce several videos for assemblies, meetings, and other class functions. We began branding our videos as Semi-Overweight Productions. Back then, I was about 100 pounds heavier, weighing almost 300 pounds. Martin was nowhere near as big as I was, but still outweighed a significant percentage of the student body. We've always loved to make fun of ourselves, and its easiest where we're the weakest... and that would be with food. So, several years later when we decided to make a couple videos just to enjoy ourselves, we brought back the name, and ever since then, we've been trying to think of how to best brand it, how to appeal to the public.

The concept of being semi overweight is fairly simple, and it doesn't always adhere to a weight guideline. To be semi overweight as I see it, is to be in search of total indulgence- food and music- at every turn. We are a society built of foodies, hip-hoppers, and audiophiles, so join us if you like.

Martin and I both love to be creative and dream big- it's what has kept us such good friends over the years, but for now "Semi Overweight" is just a creative outlet that keeps us laughing. Maybe someday we'll find a way to make it pay the bills.

Layer Cake: The Mixtape

Layer Cake is the first mixtape of instrumental beats that I've put out to the public, and in general I'm pretty proud of them. I've been trying to learn the process of putting songs together for the last couple of years. I've always played instruments and loved music, but I only got into hip-hop a few years ago. When I did though, I fell in love. I love the heavy drums and soulful licks that create the foundation for a good rapper to perform to. So basically, I decided after my first two years to gather up my favorite few beats out of the many I had created and put them out for someone besides myself to hear. The name "Layer Cake" is representative of both my love of all things baked and the compilation of different beats that represented different stages of my progression as a producer. More than anything, it was a way for me to feel like I could stop working on old beats, and get back to creating some new ones. And in the time since I published Layer Cake, I've taken some major strides as an audio engineer, making my mixes sound closer and closer to what I aspire to hear. I'm getting ready to put out another collection of instrumentals as well as working with a rapper for the first time, so I'm excited for these next few months. It's a hard balance between creativity and science, but hearing something I like is rewarding enough to keep me at it. I know I haven't written very much, but..

I've been working really hard in another class on consolidating all of the online profiles and pages that I use for my production company, and building a website to hold it all together. So, thinking that I'd be "better late than never" I've finished putting together the last few months worth of blogging, video creation, and music making. Take a look at semioverweight.com

Multimedia Assignment Post #2- Podcast

I had trouble deciding on a topic, and I'm a little microphone shy, so my Podcast is just a few short snippets of some songs I've been working on lately. Hopefully you enjoy them!
