Layer Cake: The Mixtape
Layer Cake is the first mixtape of instrumental beats that I've put out to the public, and in general I'm pretty proud of them. I've been trying to learn the process of putting songs together for the last couple of years. I've always played instruments and loved music, but I only got into hip-hop a few years ago. When I did though, I fell in love. I love the heavy drums and soulful licks that create the foundation for a good rapper to perform to. So basically, I decided after my first two years to gather up my favorite few beats out of the many I had created and put them out for someone besides myself to hear. The name "Layer Cake" is representative of both my love of all things baked and the compilation of different beats that represented different stages of my progression as a producer. More than anything, it was a way for me to feel like I could stop working on old beats, and get back to creating some new ones. And in the time since I published Layer Cake, I've taken some major strides as an audio engineer, making my mixes sound closer and closer to what I aspire to hear. I'm getting ready to put out another collection of instrumentals as well as working with a rapper for the first time, so I'm excited for these next few months. It's a hard balance between creativity and science, but hearing something I like is rewarding enough to keep me at it.
